A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a charitable giving account. You contribute to the fund and may receive tax benefits for your gift. Then, you recommend grants to charities you want to support over time.
No. You don’t need to decide where your grants will go before contributing to your Giving Fund. In fact, many givers value the freedom to take time before recommending grants. You can set aside charitable resources now and prayerfully consider where they can make the greatest impact.
We can accept a wide variety of non-cash assets – often in ways that are more tax-efficient. You may be able to contribute publicly traded stocks, mutual funds, privately held business interests, real estate, and other appreciated assets. This flexibility opens doors. It allows you to steward what you’ve built – not just what you’ve saved – and to give in ways that align with your financial picture and your long-term generosity goals. Our team helps you evaluate your options so you can give wisely, strategically, and with confidence.
Recommending a grant from your Giving Fund is simple. You go online to recommend a grant, then NCF’s charity research team reviews the request to confirm eligibility and sends the grant on your behalf. You can choose to include your name or remain anonymous.
You can recommend a grant at any time through your online Giving Fund account. Most grant recommendations can be submitted in just a few minutes. Once received, NCF reviews the request to ensure the organization qualifies and processes the grant promptly. Timing can vary slightly, depending on the nature of the organization or the details of the request; but we seek to keep your generosity moving forward without unnecessary delay. Whether you’re responding to an urgent need or planning a recurring gift, your Giving Fund gives you the flexibility to act when you feel led – with assurance that the process is handled with care.
When you recommend a grant, our team reviews the request to ensure the organization qualifies as an eligible 501(c)(3) public charity and that the grant aligns with our Guide to giving at NCF. Behind the scenes, we confirm required information and process the grant through our secure systems. Once approved, the funds are sent directly to the nonprofit on your behalf.
Once you’ve made a contribution to an NCF Giving Fund, you’re eligible to claim a tax donation in the year you’ve made the gift. Because your contribution is a completed charitable gift, the money in the Giving Fund belongs to NCF and can’t be withdrawn. The money in the Giving Fund is available for you to make grant recommendations to charities.
